October 7, 2023. A day that changed the world. The brutal attack by Hamas terrorists caught Israel completely unprepared. The largest massacre of the Jewish people since the Holocaust has left Israeli society deeply traumatized. The slogan “Never Again!” has regained stark relevance. Israel’s response was overwhelming, reducing Gaza to rubble and eliminating thousands of terrorists and their leaders, including key figures in Hamas and Hezbollah. Meanwhile, a wave of Israelophobia swept through the West, infiltrating prestigious universities and taking over the streets of major cities. Antisemitism often wasn’t even disguised. October 7 has become a day that will be remembered alongside September 11.
How did Israel fail so catastrophically on October 7? How profound is the trauma for Israelis? What are Jews experiencing in the aftermath of the massacre? What did Hamas actually achieve? Could Israel have responded differently than with a total war against Gaza? Why do Western universities hate Israel? Why are Arab states protesting the war in Gaza less than Americans and Europeans? How is it that the Czech Republic stands out in its support for the Jewish state? What will this attack and the subsequent turbulent developments mean for the region’s future? Can Benjamin Netanyahu rise again like a Phoenix? Does anyone care about the hostages? Is it possible to eliminate Hamas? Can terrorism be defeated? Is the two-state solution dead? Is peace farther away than ever before?
Leading experts on the region, writers, journalists, and political scientists seek answers to these and other questions, offering their reflections on October 7. The book presents a vivid and multilayered view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as its broader implications for the world, society, and the era in which we live.
The book’s contributors include Jan Dobrovský, Fedor Gál, Irena Kalhousová, Michael Kraus, Veronika Kuchyňová Šmigolová, Eylon Levy, Václav Marhoul, Tomáš Pojar, Věra Roubalová Kostlánová, Jake Wallis Simons, Jakub Szántó, Gad Shimron, Ondřej Šmigol, Tuvia Tenenbom, Rafaela Treistmanová, and Věra Tydlitátová.
