Natan Sharansky (born 1948) is a former Soviet dissident, Israeli politician, mathematician, chess player and writer. Born into a Jewish family in Stalino (now Donetsk), he participated in the dissident movement in the 1970s, acting as Andrey Sakharov’s English interpreter and spokesperson for the Moscow Helsinki Group. He was imprisoned by the KGB in 1977 and released in 1986 as part of a high-profile prisoner exchange between the Eastern and Western blocs at the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin.

He then moved to Israel, where he founded the political party Yisrael BaAliyah to promote the assimilation of Jewish migrants from the Soviet Union. Between 1996 and 2005, he served in various ministerial positions in several Israeli governments, including Minister for Jerusalem, Minister of Internal Affairs, and Deputy Prime Minister.  After leaving politics, he served as Chairman of the Executive for the Jewish Agency (2009–2018) and as Chairman of the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP).

He is the author of several books, including his memoirs from prison, Fear No Evil. His last book, Never Alone. Prison, Politics and My People, written with Gil Troy and originally published in 2020, recounts Sharansky’s life story, from his childhood in the Soviet Union and imprisonment, to his involvement in Israeli politics. The book is being published in Czech by Books & Pipes Publishing under the title Vězení, politika a můj lid.
