The global repercussions of Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz is just another piece of evidence (of which there have been many in the last year) that we are entering an age of geoeconomics. The supply chains, trade routes, critical resources and data infrastructure are being weaponised and actually prove to be the most efficient means of disruption.

Charles Lichfield is the director of economic foresight and analysis at the Atlantic Council’s Geoeconomics Center. He is an expert on European security, trade and energy policies. His analysis have been published on Bloomberg News, the BBC, the Financial Times and many others.

Josh Lipsky is a senior director at the Geonomics Center of the Atlantic Council. He served as an economic advisor in the White House, during the Obama administration, as well as a special advisor to the Under Secretary of State and an advisor at the International Monetary Fund.
